Ni le ciel ni la terre (2015)

A film by Clément Cogitore

Cast: Jérémie Renier, Swann Arlaud, Marc Robert

English is the correct Neither heaven, nor earth.

I think the title is going to be The Wakhan Front.

Set near a remote mountainous Afghan province in 2014, the film looks at  on a small force of about 12 men searching for signs of nearby Taliban activity in the valley. They are located on the border of tribal control, and relations between the French and the local shepherds are no so good. When they see a  young boy walking with his goat, the men have the machine gun ready. Tension rises, trust is no longer there especially when a go goes missing at first and later on 2 men disappeared without a trace. No sight of struggle is there. The tension increase thing start to go haywire a bit. The captain feels the pressure to resolve this.

Film in night vision here the search for the missing goes into a trip of the unknown.  Word are exchange even insult. There is a strong cast here Jérémie Renier and Kévin Azaïs. who carries the film here. Sylvain Verdet’s cinematography  is unusual switching between the bright sunny daytime to the green fluorescence of the night vision the soldiers use. I am assuming that the actors went to training before making the film because they look like soldiers not actors trying to be soldiers. The soldier are becoming insomniac as the tension rising as well as the pressure to try to make sense of what is going on. Conflict between the people and the military rises and still the military does not know how to resolve this nor they know where the men disappear too. There is a twist at the end of the film that resolve it.
