A film by Rick Famuyiwa
Cast: Shameik Moore, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons
Here is a film well writing, creative and well thought out. You will get hooked on the first 30 minutes. It goes like this: we first get introduced to geeky best friends Malcolm (Shameik Moore), Jib (The Grand Budapest Hotel’s Tony Revolori), and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons). The film is set in Inglewood, CA. Malcolm and his crew are old school. He rocks a high-top fade, wears Cross Colours, and indulges in other “white things” like Donald Glover and manga comics. They even speaks the slang of back in the day. They live in the hood where violence speaks out loud and going to school they’re the target of bullies. Malcolm is a smart kid with dreams of graduating high school and going to Harvard but kids from the hood does not get that far. Yes there is some that will but it is rare.
One day he gets invited to this drug dealer’s birthday party things, but things ge sour quickly and Dom the drug dealer stash a shit load of drugs plus gun and cell phone in his back pack before he got arrested. The film become about Malcolm who has a stash of dope and is trying to get rid of it. And then becomes creative which is brain is going to go in geek mode. The film has little resemblance of House Party, Risky Business, and revenge of the nerd to me anyway. Nice combination there. Of course Famuyiwa has written an urban comedy as good as dear white people, he has done it with creativity. You get to hang with Malcolm and his friends you follow them through out the daily lives what they went though it. The funniest part is Lily a slutty chick Malcolm meets, and a hilarious use of the word “poundcake”. Over all you will have a great time with this film. Here the director refuse to fall under the labels which make this film the funniest film for the year but the year is not over yet.
