THE INSULT (2018)

THE INSULT

A film by Ziad Doueiri

Cast: Adel Karam, Kamel El Basha, Camille Salameh

In Beirut, an insult blown out of proportions finds Toni, a Lebanese Christian, and Yasser, a Palestinian refugee in court. From old war wound, and prejudice the media circus is forming and the judge fears that a big confrontation between Palestinian and lebanese are going to take place so he asked the 2 parties to reconsider their lives and prejudices.

Here is a Director who is not afraid to tackle this subject matter. Ok there are Palestinians, refugees who have been in Lebanon for many years and now comprise ten percent of the population, Which does not flies with the Lebanese. Tony Hanna (Adel Karam), a 46-years-old mechanic with a pregnant wife, is watering plants on his apartment’s balcony when he  splashes a construction crew on the street below. The crew’s foreman, Yasser Salameh (Kamel El Basha) notices there’s an illegal pipe on Tony’s apartment and offers to fix it. But Tony shut the door on them.  So the foreman decided to fix the problem without telling Tony. Tony noticed what they are doing takes a hammer and breaks the pipe, you have guessed it the insults are going to fly. Tony demands an apology. Things get out of hand and goes to court because Yasser has a hard time apologising.  The trial unfolds, it provokes violent outbursts both inside and outside the courtroom, and sensational media coverage, with personal Bitter hostility, with old wounds from the war. Here is an intelligent written script and a director who knows how to give directions to his actors who are in turn are great to watch. Do not miss this one. And yes there are a few surprises that will surface.

  1. I love controversial-subject or different culture-opening films, and I guess this is the film for me. Nice review!
