LE CIRCLE ROUGE (1970)
A film by Jean-Pierre Melville
Cast: Alain Delon, Bourvil, Gian Maria Volonté
English title: The Red Circle.
Here is one for you a great film by Melville and they are not well-known in America unfortunately. However in France it is love at first sight. They just released remastered digitally the best of Melville like Le Flic, Le Doulos, L’armeé des Hombres, and Le Cercle Rouge. So I went to see Le Circle Rouge. I haven’t seen it in 10 years but seen it on the big screen it is awesome. This is two stories that is going to merge themselves. Melville is a master here it is like performing like a ballet every thing is in place and voila some this and turn you have your great heist film ever. Melville is attentive to the last details. His characters usually some cigarette it is natural as breathing to them, carries guns and has a code of honor. To top it all off the heist is done with precision and Melville has paid attention to every details and the heist is not the point of the film like every heist film where it is. It is about their nature. Bourvil who plays a cop plays it strict and by the book with intelligence. Here you have a smart screen play with some smart characters. The heroes of this film may win or lose but they won’t rat on each other you have to respect the code. BY the way great acting from Yves Montand.
