A film by Robert Budreau
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Carmen Ejogo, Callum Keith Rennie
We just go this film in a week ago and it is going to get off the grid so soon in Paris anyway. it is about the jazz trumpet legend Chet Baker . It first was done in a documentary of his life called Let’s get lost which I have not seen yet but will soon enough.
Born To Be Blue is interested, refreshingly, in what Baker’s charisma meant and how it operated. Outside of talent, there was something about Baker’s image the James Dean’s hair the predominant jaw line and yes he drew audiences big time he was on the top of the bill board No. 1 above Davis Miles. He was a gifted artist but a long time addiction of heroin killed his images and it went down to hell. The film picks up where he is in jail in Italy. He is trying to kick up the habit and get back his life together. The film focuses on the period in the 1950s and 1960s when Baker became emblematic of what was known as West Coast jazz, an anomaly because of the color of his skin, but it was embraced by some legend of the day like Miles Davis, Dizzy,Gillespie, Charlie Parker. The film shows Baker gutting his way back after getting his front teeth knocked out in 1968 under mysterious circumstances. A great film were Ethan Hawks Shines big time. A performance that understands Baker’s appeal, Baker’s demons and eventual willingness to fight those demons, and later the unwillingness to fight them. Plus the charisma that he had to him was probably a curse. A terrific look at the come back of this great artist who had it all, lost it all, and came back but could not fight off his demons.
A film by Antoine Fuqua
Cast: Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke
Ok I am going to say this like this not again a reboot let’s leave it along, let’s be creative about it and try to do something new. Although this reboot has a higher octane intake. Yes there is a great cast done not mean that it is going to be great and no it is not great. Just see it as for what it is entertaining.
A greedy ruthless and heartless businessman Bartholomeuw Bogue (Peter Saarsgard) came to this small village Rose Creek, to get all the gold from the mine plus the land of the people for dirt cheap. Bogue shot to death a young man, after questioning about Bogues cruelty and morality when Bouge’s men beat a man almost to death .The death of that young man pissed off Emma Cullen (Halley Bennet) he was her husband after all. Here comes Chisolm (Denzel Washington) who is looking for a man who is wanted for rape and murder, Then Emma asked him if he could help them.
There are some cool characters in this film like Josh Faraday (Chris Pratt), a sharpshooter Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke) a traumatized war veteran, a tracker Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio) who needs to lose some weight, an assassin Billy Rocks (Byung-hun Lee), a Mexican outlaw Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and an indian Comanche warrior Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier) skilled with bow and arrow.. The story goes from there in high-octane with some great action scene that you would expect, Mexican stand-off, and the occasion explosion and machine gun. Nothing new there. The performance of the actors are outstanding especially the one from Halley Bennet. Yes there is your dose of comic relief. The film feel like that it is more action than it is in some western, I am not so sure that it is good to do that, it is edited rapidly that most of the time you lose track of what is going one. Not the greatest western ever made but some how it works here. And please let’s not remake or reboot like they call it those days a film ever likely not going to happen (Just a feeling).
A film by Rebecca Miller
Cast: Greta Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, Julianne Moore
Here is a woman where her biological clock is ticking and decided to have a baby on her own but it derails when she falls in love with a married man her professor at the university . to top it all off she destroys his volatile marriage.
This film got presented to the Berlin film festival. The film is a cool little comedy of SSD ( The scene of the sperm donation) a comedy that gently mock artistic circles and new York intellectuals. Maggie has a plan has in addition to its wonderful and eccentric leading lady ( Greta Gerwig) a big plus, no doubt, with the presence of Julianne Moore who is a control freak, outrageously manipulative and perverse pure genius there. You will have a good time with this one guaranteed with laughter. As for the film it has a surprisedly a surprise ending with a beautiful spread. It is a sweet little jewel.
A film by Scott Derrickson
Cast: Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, James Ransone
Washed-up true-crime writer Ellison Oswald Ethan Hawke) finds a box of super 8 home movies when he moves in the house where a bunch of murders happened. Seeing the home movies he concludes it is the work of a serial killer dated as far back as 1960.
Finally an other horror film with imagination and creativity. The washed up true-crime novelist here does not tell his wife that it is the house where the murders has happened first mistake. He drags his family into it and they all move in the house, he feel that is going be on top again because of this novel that he is writing. Second mistake. James Ransone, who played “Deputy So And So.” Many of what should have been the most effective scenes and crucial scenes, as he does an outstanding job here I might add that the film is well cast. Of course you have the creepy music that goes with this film as well as the noise and the ghosts that will scare your writer played by Ethan Hawke a terrific actor here. There are sequences that will make you jump one did for me. An other thing don’t matter how many times the opening scene was shown, the effectiveness never wore off. The film is full of sequence that will leave a chill in your spine. There is a twist at the end and it is quite good and effective. A must see do not miss this one.
A film by Richard Linklater
Cast: Ellar Coltrane, Patricia Arquette, Ethan Hawke
Richard Linklater decided to do a film about a family in America , shooting began in the summer of 2002 and ended in the fall of 2013. Yes it is a risk but ground breaking and never been done like that. Ellar Coltrane who plays the boy of the title, was 7 years old when the movie started filming and 18 when it finished. Basically the all cast aged 12 years. Richard Linklater cast his daughter Loreilei Linklater as Samantha because she was always singing and dancing around the house and wanted to be in his movies. At about the fourth year of filming, she lost interest and asked for her character to be killed off. Linklater refused, saying it was too violent for what he was planning Lorelei eventually regained her enthusiasm and continued with the project. There were a lot of buzz through the media as Linklater revealed that he film the film for a period of 12 years. We watch the kids grow up and the adult thicken some of them and gray. You have the father of mason who is played by Ethan Hawke lives the bohemian musician life style while the mother Olivia (Patricia Arquette) looking to replace her ex. Mason has a sister who tease him all the time. We see a lot in this film we see the kids in harry potter, we see the series Mad men, and the andy griffin show, the campaign of Obama, that’s what makes boyhood unique. Mason is a child who’s parents divorced and his mom moved a lot. he had to make friend al over again. His sister was not happy about it but she went along anyway. Mason senior does not have custody so he has to accommodate his wife shift. He was on the positive side of it. The parents puts their kid first and it is not easy to do they want sometime to themselves. The father is the playmate to the kids he loves to play with them to take them to the ball game camping fishing trip. As mason’s sister grow up she want to party with her friends does not want to go with her dad. Mason is the deep thinker of the family. Even when Mason senior is still a teenager even at 40 his apartment is decorated like a teenager. He drives a GTO that is the car he gets girls with and date younger woman later on we see him settle down and having a kid and driving a station wagon. Mason gets into some drugs alcohol and sex with his girlfriend who dumps him for a jock. That is all I am going to say you get the point. Outstanding jobs for the actors and director. A must see.
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney, and Marisa Tomei star in director Sidney Lumet’s thriller concerning two brothers who hatch a plan to rob their parent’s jewelry store. When the job goes awry, the entire family is set on a collision course with tragedy. Andy (Hoffman) is an overextended broker in desperate need of some cash. His brother, Hank (Hawke), isn’t much better off, so when Andy hatches a plan to rob their parent’s modest jewelry store , it seems like a foolproof way to make a quick buck. Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is an immensely disturbing and tragic morality tale, which focuses on the consequences and repercussions of a sinister act driven by greed. Title taken from the Irish toast: “May you have food and raiment, a soft pillow for your head; may you be 40 years in heaven, before the devil knows you’re dead.” In the original script, Andrew and Hank Hanson were not brothers. Sidney Lumet made this change to increase the drama of the movie. He also removed the character of Andrew & Gina’s daughter. Sidney Lumet was introduced to digital film techniques through this production and reportedly loved working with digital film, primarily due to it’s convenience. This was his first and ultimately only film to be shot in the digital format. In the DVD’s Director’s commentary, Sidney Lumet stated that in the original script, the character of Bobby Lasorda was supposed to be only 19 years old. The character was made older to make the character seem more realistic and sad. In the DVD’s Director’s commentary, Sidney Lumet says the nude scene between Gina and Hank was shot, Ethan Hawke wanted to make Marisa Tomei, feel more comfortable, and insisted on being nude as well. He further insisted that every male crew member strip naked while filming the scene to accommodate Tomei. Sidney Lumet’s final film. Leonardo Cimino’s last film. Leonardo Cimino’s last film.
