GRACE À DIEU (2019)

A film by François Ozon

Cast:  Melvil Poupaud, Denis Ménochet, Swann Arlaud

English title: By the grace of god

Alexandre lives in Lyon with his wife and children. One day, he discovered by pure luck that the priest who abused him at the boys scouts, and has sexually abused children. He then embarks on a fight, quickly joined by François and Emmanuel, also victims of the priest, to tell their stories to the media But the repercussions and consequences of these confessions will leave no one unscathed.

Here is a director who can jump from genre to genre making movies. He always surprises audiences with the subject matter and always writes his films. Grâce à Dieu is based on the real case of Father Bernard Preynat who in 2016 was charged with sexually assaulting around 70 boys in Lyon. Two things here the pain of the three man that the priest inflicted on those victims and the second he film criticises the church’s silence on paedophilia. Great cast in this one Melvil Poupaud is Alexandre a wealthy Lyonnais banker who has found success with his wife Marie (Petit) and five kids. Dénis Menochet is less cautious about his confessions, bringing an explosive emotional part for this actor. Emmanuel (Swann Arlaud) who claims his whole life has been traumatised by what happened, making it difficult for him to deal parent’s divorce and destroying his ability to connect emotionally with women, plus had difficulties to learn at school. Other will join the cause as the film goes along. Ozon does a great job of tipping the balance with the graphic scene plus there are some flashback not too much that will speak for themselves. of course every countries all over the world has a least an incident like that and yet the church kept it quiet and moved the priest to some other parishes. Ozon who does not seems to disappoint as usual has done a great job telling the story.

L’AMANT DOUBLE (2017)

Lamant-double-218x340

cannes

A film by François Ozon

Cast: Marine Vacth, Jérémie Renier, Jacqueline Bisset

English: The double lover

Chloe, a fragile and depressed young woman, undertakes psychotherapy and falls in love with her psychiatrist, Paul. A few months later, they settle down together, but she discovers that her lover has hidden some of her identity.

Here Ozon did not win at the Cannes films festival but adapted the screenplay from  the novel Lives of the Twins by  Rosamond Smith, this stylish over-the-top genre cocktail combines satire, melodrama, tongue-in-cheek horror tropes, and a hell of a visual especially at the beginning of the film has done a hell of a thriller here where you are going to have a good time watching this extravaganza and don’t forget the wine please.

A the beginning of the film the editing is an audacious move that you have not seen before well I have not. L’Amant Double may be a film that puts one in mind of nineties erotic thrillers but there’s also a lot of Hitchcock / De Palma there too, and as this opening  Ozon put his own sauce to it. The story goes like this ,  Chloe (Marine Vacth) depressed god to a psychiatrist named Paul (Jeremy Renier) who soon fall for each other. Soon moves in together and one day Chloe discovers that Paul is hiding something. The visual here is outstanding resemble at a film like Vertigo an homage at Alfred Hitchcock of course. the film is filled to the brim with pure cinematic imagery brutally edited in such a way that it ressemble at several film at times. Ozon once said I have no intention of making a classic film. I want to experiment , I want to push boundaries and he has done just that with is film. He spends is time on human relationship here and made it a, brilliant erotic-Freudian thriller, hitchcockian just as much as naughty and quite disturbing.

FRENCH FILMS BACK IN CANNES

Festival-de-Cannes-2017-les-quatre-chances-francaises-pour-la-Palme-d-or

Pictures of the 4 french films.

French cinema has regained the taste of the Palme d’or. While it took more than twenty years to find a successor to Maurice Pialat’s “Sous le Soleil de Satan”, the Palme d’Or in 1987, the last decade saw three French directors crowned: Laurent Cantet for ” Between the Walls “in 2008, Abdellatif Kéchiche for” La Vie d’Adèle “in 2013 and finally Jacques Audiard for” Dheepan “in 2014. This year, four contenders are in the running.

Robin Campillo, with “120 Battements par minute” (120 Beats a minutes) Set in the early 1990s, the film depicts a group of HIV/AIDS activists associated with the Paris chapter of ACT UP.

Jacques Doillon, avec «Rodin» The French  sculptor just in case you did not know I can’t wait to see that one.

Michel Hazanavicus, avec «Le Redoutable» This has to be interesting. Here is why and I know one of you won’t be able to wait to see this one. During the making of one of his films, French film director Jean-Luc Godard falls in love with 17-year old actress Anne Wiazemsky and later marries her. Another one of my favorite Director and Hazanavicus has done a off beat comedy about it.

UNE NOUVELLE AMIE (2014)

une_nouvelle_amie_grd-2-f173c

A film by François Ozon

Cast: Romain Duris, Anaïs Demoustier, Raphaël Personnaz

English title: The new girlfriend.

When Claire’s (Anais Demoustier) best friend Laura (Isild Le Besco) dies at a young age, she finds herself having to live up to her promise of looking over her widower, David (Romain Duris), and their six month old baby. However, after procrastinating because of the pain her husband tells her to see David that will do her a lot of good. When she turns up at his house she discover a shocking secret. No not that one.

François Ozon is becoming the hottest director in France , he sees to write well. This one is an adaptation form the novel The New girlfriend by Ruth Rendell. It is because of the is secret that she discover that she had a taste for life again. It is a light comedy a la Hitchcock. Certainly it is no the first time that Hitchcock’s shadow is floating above Ozon’s film. As you see the woman from her back in the house as she turn around slowly to reveal herself it has been copied in the film Psycho from Alfred Hitchcock. It is a very complex story as the film progresses you think it is going to be a thriller but not so like I said it is alight comedy/drama. It is about a man who is a window and a woman who missing and desired her best friend between them a dead woman . The montage at the beginning of the film is pure perfect and beautifully photographed . Romain Duris is outstanding in this film you have to go to the distance and it is not easy to do a role like this one. The New Girlfriend is a confident, thought-provoking and great piece of art.

JEUNE ET JOLIE (2013)

A film by François Ozon.
Cast: Marine Vacth, Géraldine Pailhas, Frédéric Pierrot.
English title: Young and Beautiful.
The portrait of a 17 year-old girl, in 4 seasons and 4 songs. That is to sums it up very shortly but wait there is more yes, yes, there is more.“Young & Beautiful,” starring the appropriately cast newcomer Marine Vacth in the title role, who leaves in a bourgois family, decided to be a call girl for money and dangerous fun. “Young & Beautiful” is in fact questioning everyday notions about sex and the institution of marriage. You see this teenager going through her customer some nice some not so nice. When sudently the police contact the mother and informed her about her teenage daughter and her activity. Now in real life the police told Ozon that they contact the teenager first because
usually not always the Parent are suspect, Ozon told a reporter he did it that way so the mother can talk to the daughter. Isabelle (Marine vacth) has this problem does she want to be with someone and fall in love or does she want to get paid for sex and be detach form that person. She tries to have a relationship with a teenager but she says to him it is not working. I am not going to go in detail for those who din’t see the film yet. Great film From François Ozon.
