PRIDE (2014)

A film by Matthew Warchus

Cast: Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West

As an account of the real-life 1984-85 alliance between the London fundraising group Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) and the people of Onllwyn, a mining village in Wales’s Dulais Valley, this is base on a true story. The thing is it is a civil rights movement story but you add a gay activist civil rights movement than the studio goes we’ll pass. It is hard to make a film like that when you have so much against you. But it was done thanks to Matthew Warchus. You see you have this little village who are a bunch of miners back in 1984 they strike for one year to the day. So when the gay activists decided to raise money for the miners. The thing is will they accept the money knowing that it comes from?

Here is a well made British film at his best, a comedy none of less, a great comedy. This is about acceptance and coming together who ever you are or what your belief is. You have this 20 years old kid Joe (George MacKay) who is a closet gay. No one in his family knows hi secret. He gets caught in a gay parade in the middle of it and meets Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) who is the leader of the group and later decide to raise money for the miners and form a group called LGSM (‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’). Helping him are his assorted friends including gay couple Jonathan and Gethin (Dominic West and the brilliant Andrew  Scott), Mike (Joseph Gilgun), Jeff (Freddie Fox) and Steph (Faye Marsay). The funny thing is that the miners are a bunch of homophobic people. So the union wants nothing to do with them and their money. On the top of that back in the 80’s was the start of Aids, that was thrown in the film you ‘ll se why when you get a chance to see the film. a great performance by the actors and the cinematography is beautiful especially when they go to the village. This is not your mama and papa cinema but it is a great comedy and tell a part of history that happen in England back then.
