Colette; Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, 28 January 1873 – 3 August 1954) was a French author and woman of letters nominated for the Nobel Prize inLiterature in 1948; also known as a mime, actress, and journalist. Here is her life story.
Well first I thought the French cinema would at least make the picture but instead it is a US / British film. We begin the story with young Colette who is barely out of high school where she meets the man named Willy Dominic West. The relationship soon flourishes and they are to be married. She finds herself form the country to Paris in the middle of the art community. You see Willy is a writer well not really he tells writers to write the story that he wants him to write. Soon he can’t afford them so he tells Colette to write about her friend she went to school with. It soon becomes the best seller in France and Willy is praised for his book that he put his name to it. Soon after Willy ask her to write a sequel about Claudine. Back then it is a man world and women couldn’t be author. Of course comes the affairs from willy and the fact that Colette wants to become more independent. So she demand that her novel have her name on it as an author.
The film shows the struggle that a woman writer has back in the late 1800’s in the belle époque which the director as so beautifully put together. The chemistry of both actors is amazing and so is their acting. By the way Colette was most widely known for her 1944 novel Gigi (1944).
The movie was inspired by Domino Harvey, a friend of Scott’s, who was named Bounty Hunter of the Year in 2003 and died in July 2005, of a drug overdose, only 35 years old. The daughter of the movie star Laurence Harvey and the fashion model Paulene Stone (renamed Sophie Wynn in the movie) She went to the best school as she said but ended up as a bounty hunter. She was good at it she has won an award for best bounty hunter go the year in 2003 ( did not know there were such an award). My agenda is to kick ass she always said.
The film is inspired by a true story. Domino (Keira Knightley) sees a course for bounty hunter and decides to sign up to find out that the three great bounty hunters Ed Mosbey (Mickey Rourke), Choco (Edgar Ramirez), and Claremont Williams (Delroy Lindo) bailing out taking the tuition money go after them and demand to be taking seriously. Mosbey’s team also includes Alf (Rizwan Abbasi), an Afghan who knows a lot about blowing things up. Choco is a tough guy from El Salvador who is offended that anyone would speak English in LA. And Rourke does his thing. Here the funniest character is Mark Heiss (Christopher Walken), a TV producer an other great actor here. Domino is fun plus it is edited à la MTV. It has a yellow greenish graphic stylization feel to it. Domino is a big mess it feels like a punk-rock fever dream. Quick razor-sharp cut editing with some slow mo action at times. An unusual thriller here that feel like you on LSD watching it and it looks cool. But like I said it is inspired by of the life of Domino and a hell of a vision from Tony Scott. Like Jean-Luc Goddard has always said To do a film all you need is a girl and a gun.
Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode
Alan Turing, (Benedict Cumberbatch) one of Britain’s most extraordinary heroes, whose efforts and accomplishments remained unknown for far too long. You will know why in a second. And it is a movie about secrets. the importance how to keep them and the damage that when uncovered by others. It is a team of mathematicians who went to work for MI6 to decode German messages that was intercepted during WWII.
The casting is so perfect it is not even funny. Turing was a brilliant mathematician and cryptanalyst who worked at Bletchley Park, the top-secret Government Code and Cypher School during World War II, where he created a machine that succeeded in breaking Germany’s unbreakable Enigma machine. Benedict played like Turing as an arrogant mathematician but not in a mean way. His co-worker took a little time to warm up to him. Joan Clarke (Keira Knightley) came to be a help to Turing, she got in a male dominated world but that didn’t stop her to do her job and well at that. She became his best friend abd help him out with his social skills, so he won’t be an an isolated individual. You see geniuses has a tendency to have no social skills well very little and they are isolated or have a few friend. Well I know few of my friends are geniuses and they are like that. The majority of the film is center on Turing making the machine to break the code and his coworkers. The score of the film is marvelous and the film turns to be the best thriller of the year of me anyway with a brilliant performance by Benedict Cumberbatch.
Here is a film that you should see with your girlfriend and she will love you for it and get lucky later on. Begin again (although I wouldn’t went with that tile) is a freshly music romantic film à la fairy tale. A down on his luck music-business executive and a young singer-songwriter new to Manhattan who just got dumb by her rock star on the rise boyfriend decided to make a demo tape by using the recording studio as the city of New York.
The soundtrack is wonderful with catchy tune and well written. It is simple to follow, fun to watch and yes it is going to become a classic years later. Carney avoided the cliché on this one. The story is interested and keep the viewer glue to the screen. Carney had a bigger budget on this one and better stars. Keira Knightley who plays Gretta is near perfect she gets dump by her boyfriend who become a rising rock star who she wrote songs for him. Later on she gets discover out of the blue singing a song at a bar where this music executive/producer is there half way drunk. He is played by Mark Buffalo who is terrific. He sees it as his come back and maybe he can have his job back, some kind of redemption. With the help of friends they find musicians and record on the street of New York. Here is an original idea for a story. What I like about both characters Gretta and Dan is that they don’t want to sell out they want to make a record their way , Gretta especially when she write the song the music has to go with it , she does not want something that is hip or rehashed, she want originality and she does not to seek out either she stick with her guns. Well written By Carney most definitely. Well have fun.
