the beguiled

Cannes

A film by Sofia Coppola

In a beautiful plantation mansion a bunch a women lives there ,away from the civil war. When one day an unexacting soldier who is wounded seeks refuge in the so-called school of women where jealousy and betrayal is going to take place and may the festivities begin.

The Beguiled (2017)

The girls here which one of them found him wounded are going to be disturbed by his presence, they are going to be thrown off-balance which jealousy is going to rage through their veins. Thomas Cullinan’s 1966 novel (originally titled A Painted Devil) was the basis for the 1971 film directed by Siegel. I have not seen it yet but I will soon. You see director Don Siegel said the film was about “the basic desire of women to castrate men,”Here Sofia removed that in her version of the book, she also removed a bunch of other stuff now I am curious how is this film back in 1971, I guess I am going to find out. The film suffers a bit from the absence of melodrama not too worried it is still good, I still enjoy it. This is Coppola’s film, she is interested in the ridiculousness of repressing the sex drive. The things that are not easy said that what she is interested in. The interior of the realm where the women dominate and the man rests. The cinematography in the one is beautiful. The cinematographer has been able to capture the essence of the sun rise and sunset plus the calmness of the forest with the occasional cannon you can hear in the background. Overall I enjoy this film a breath a fresh air.
