the red turtle

A film by Michael Dudok de Wit

The red turtle has caught the eye of the film festival of Cannes. The dialogue less animation is powered by classical music. Michael Dudok de Wit went to France at Angoulême ti make this animation. There was a lot of buzz about that one so I decided to go see it and was not disappointed. What is the most unbelievable is how simple every aspect of the film is. It is like a story book.

The story unfold You follow a man who is caught in a bad storm is in the ocean and manages to stay alive until he washed away on this island. It is like a Robinson Crusoe story here and you will see how he is trying to survive off the island. Michael Dudok de Wit who wrote the story here has use his imagination big time and made it into a little fantasy animation that works well here. You will spent one hour and twenty minutes of wonderful time with you kids. It is as well as for adult here too. The absence of dialogue here lets the audience absorb the beautiful imagery. Here you have a beautiful and lyrical journey through life – without even saying a word.

the red turtle -3

A film by Byron Howard, Rich Moore

Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Bateman, Idris Elba

Zootopia, a fantasy set in a city where predators and prey live together in harmony, is a funny, beautifully designed kids’ film with a message that it restates at every turn. And yes the massage here does not fall apart it keeps on coming. Discrimination is wrong, but stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason and it is not easy to overcome the reason but you will have to be patient.

Ginnifer Goodwin  who voices Bunny Hops, a small town rabbit who’s told that she can’t be a police officer in Zootopia because there’s never been a rabbit police officer. The job tends to be done by rather large predators. and yes Hops makes it through police training anyway and gets assigned to meter maid duty which she does not like, she wants real work.  Well her carrot farmer parents (Bonnie Hunt and Don Lake),  gave her fox repellent as a going-away present. Nice. Well of course you have guessed it, Hops ends up partnered with a red fox named Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a small-time hustler who reluctantly helps her investigate the disappearances of a dozen predators. Like I said here is a disney animation with a message asking its characters to look past species stereotypes.  And yes  there are acknowledgments of the destructive self-hatred that discrimination can cause. May of the animals makes jokes at the expense of stereotypes about their species. The thing is Wilde became a hustler because other animals hazed him as a pup while repeating anti-fox stereotypes. So he became the hustler to him there were no other choice. But Hops is optimistic if you want it bad enough you are going to work as hard if not harder than the other. The thriller’s plot, borrows from 48 HRS and every cop drama involving governmental conspiracy, is smartly written here. Here is a cool animation that will become a classic before we know it. And yes it is for kids as well as for adults.

Inside Out (I) (2015)

A film by Pete Docter, Ronaldo Del Carmen

Cast: Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Lewis Black

A girl experiencing conflicting emotions and an ever-growing shyness after her parents move her from Minnesota to San Francisco.

We are introduced to Riley where she si just born at the same time we are introduced to the emotions which occupy her mind: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). All of them take their turns at the controls of Riley’s mind, but Joy has the most influence as she is determined to keep Riley as happy no matter what. Yeah! who want to be unhappy right.

Things changes drastically when Riley’s Parents are moving to San Francisco. The girl finds out that it is not what it’s cracked up to be. New town, new friends and the moving truck won’t be in until a couple of days later that they planned. The house is a dump well you get the picture. As the results joy feels threaten by the negative emotions which begin to have more influence over this pre-teen girl who has yet to discover the horrors of turning 13.

Here is a cool Animation for kids here where Pixar has put their imagination at work. The story telling is exceptional here. The cast here is perfectly chosen. There is an unforgettable moments like when certain parts of Riley’s mind like Imagination Land crumbles and falls into the Memory Dump where memories are forever forgotten. As a kid you will not remember some stuff when you are going to be ab adult, I can’t remember all of my childhood but some it. I want to get some thing back but we ca not. Also there is some stuff you want to forget but can’t. Hey! That’s life. The thing is sometimes we are happy sometimes not. Pixar has not done one bad animation here so far and to me that is a good thing. A little information here when Steven Jobs got fired from Apple some how he met George Lucas who told him I have an Animation company that I want to sell to you if you are interested. Of course Steven Jobs said yes bought it and even said that it is fun to work in this business not so much with Apple. Years later he got call back to Apple and was doing both. If you have kids I would suggest to take them to see it.

BIG HERO 6 (2014)

Big Hero 6 (2014)

An Animation by Don Hall, Chris Williams

Cast: Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Jamie Chung

Okay this animation is from Disney, it is done à la Japanese and the city it takes place it is called to me any way Franstokyo. It si for kids so no one gets killed but the bad guy gets caught. the center of the story is this 14 years old genius Japanese-American kid called Hero (Ryan Potter) and his brother Tadashi and his aunt looking after him, but he is a handful. After graduating from high school at 13, he gotten into a  con game that takes the legal competition of robot fights from the local schools to the back alleys and adds to an illegal gambling. When the adult figures out his con, and they are going to beat the kid up his brother shows up on a scooter and gets away. He gets the lecture from his bothers and tries to get him in his school but to get in he will have to have a science project . His brother however has his a robot called Baymax who takes care of people health. Of course Hero win with his science project. But his invention gets stolen while the school is on fire. Hero and his gang with the help of Baymax are trying to find out who did this.

Here is a terrific animation who won an oscar. The baymax character  is cool he looks like a big snowman/sumo wrestler. it is from the comic books which I did know existed. I find it refreshing an new idea for an animation. Of course you have the characters of the street girl and the stupid slacker to go with it. It is a typical super hero film formula. The film has humor in it which work well here. The thing is something got my attention remember in Terminator the kid teaches the Terminator about life and what not to do and do. Well with Baymax is taught with the kid a few things. Nothing wrong with that it works here well here too. Also when baymax is in a druken state when his batteries are low and it is funny as hell. Here is a terrific imaginative well done Animation. The camera angle are ver creative as well some that I have nit see in any animation ever. If you have kids bring to see it. Although I think it is on DVD in the states already but I am not sure.

A film by Louis Clichy, Alexandre Astier

Cast: Roger Carel, Lorànt Deutsch, Laurent Lafitte

 Asterix: The domain of Gods.

Julius Caesar has a  diabolical plan to dislodge the small  Gaulish village who still resist the Roman invaders: Forcing this barbaric people to adapt or die! For this, he gave missions Anglaigus architect whose works do not collapse only sometimes , construction of the “Domain of the Gods“, a huge complex of buildings surrounding the village

Let me explain something here. This is comes from a comic book that started on August October 29 1959. I remember this comic books when I was a kid I used to read it a lot and loved it. It is French comic book. It was written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo until his death in 1977. Uderzo then took over the writing until 2009, when he sold the rights to publishing company Hachette. As of 2013, 35 volumes have been released. Asterix leave in this Gaulish village and the Romans wants to take the village and the Gaulois has beat the roman every time at it. Every time the Romans finds new way to try to take the village. Now Asterix has a let’s say a secret weapon. A magic potion that he carries with him at all the time it is brewed by their druid called Getafix( in the English translation). If he drinks it he has superhuman strength. Obelix is his friend, he on the other hand when he was a kid he fell off in the pot of magic potion. There for he never needs it. You see when Asterix takes it wear off and he has to take some more but not Obelix, although he has to eat a lot of food. This is a terrific Animation made in France. It has a lot of humor in it. This time they done it well finally although I didn’t see the other ones but I heard that they are so-so. Stick with that one. Although we have now in France only A Theme Park named Park Asterix 22 miles north of Paris and every year you have 1.6 million visitors a year it is the most visited Park in France, it open in 1989. This animation of Asterix like I said is the best one of them all there has been a few of them and also in films. This one stayed true to the comic book. 2 million people in France has seen this one so far that we are waiting for the second one with the same terrific actors and the same formula. In the news they were talking about animation in France get this Japan and the U.S are the biggest country who does animation that works well. Well Japan it is no surprise to me it is a culture over there big time. The second one is Canada, third is France. Dreamworks as well as Pixar comes in Paris in this school called les Gobellins , it is an animation school open to the student 18 to 26 years of age. They come in as see if there is student who wants to work for them of course they choose the best of them.

Astérix: Le domaine des dieux (2014)

Sorry no English subtitle in this one yet.

A film by Steven Spielberg.
Cast: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig.
Having bought a model ship, the Unicorn, for a pound off a market stall Tintin is initially puzzled that the sinister Mr. Sakharine should be so eager to buy it from him, resorting to murder and kidnapping Tintin – accompanied by his marvellous dog Snowy – to join him and his gang as they sail to Morocco on an old cargo ship. Sakharine has bribed the crew to revolt against the ship’s master, drunken Captain Haddock, but Tintin, Snowy and Haddock escape, arriving in Morocco at the court of a sheikh, who also has a model of the Unicorn. Haddock tells Tintin that over three hundred years earlier his ancestor Sir Francis Haddock was forced to scuttle the original Unicorn when attacked by a piratical forebear of Sakharine but he managed to save his treasure and provide clues to its location in three separate scrolls, all of which were secreted in models of the Unicorn.

I remember I read all the books of Tintin when I was a kid and I lived them. Now Spielberg has done lost of the raiders as he commented, he saw a review of his movie and at the end he could see Tintin the review was in french and he thought that it was a word saying it was a good movie. But in reality they said that raiders of the lost arc is similar Tintin is just a kid and a journalist and Indiana jones is an adult and a professor at a university. so Spielberg decided to read all the books and called the author Hergé and decided to do a film of Tintin but 3 weeks later Hergé died. So years later Spielberg decided to do the film and asked the widow of Hergé her permission to do the film. Some how years later Spielberg talks to Peter Jackson and peter tells him what about an animation. And the rest it’s history.
the animation has Planes, automobiles , villains, ships at sea and helicopter. Fun well directed by Spielberg shot in 3D. I think he is going to do the all series of it. I can’t wait I am going to have the collection of Tintin on DVD.
